Bennie R. Hill, Sr. age 68 of Pulaski passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011 in the VA Medical Center, Salem, Virginia.
Born March 16, 1943 in Pulaski, he was the son of the late Charlotte Long Hill Warf and Benny B. Hill. His former wife and mother of his son, Dreama Dawn Taylor and brother, John Stites; sisters, Louise Stites, June Warf and Charlotte Ann Warf also preceded him in death.
He was a retired building engineer for A.B. M. Engineering in Los Angeles, California.
Bennie was a Vietnam veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He also served during Sept. 1961 when Castro threatened to overrun Guantanamo Naval base, during the Fall 1962 Naval Blockade in Cuba during the Soviet supplied missile installation. He also participated in the April 1963 search and rescue of the Submarine USS Thresher, participated in the March 1965 Gemini 10 recovery operations, served three months in the 1965 Dominican Republic crisis, served in the Interdiction of communist waterborne logistics operation in Vietnam in 1966. In August 1967, he participated in the NASA test involving the newest Apollo space capsule. In 1969, he once again served in Vietnam with the interdiction of communist waterborne logistics operation, gunfire support to 1st and 3rd marine divisions and destruction of the surface to air missiles. He worked with children and seniors for 11 years as a member of Huntington Beach, CA Baptist Church.
Bennie was a long time member of the Pulaski V.F.W. Post # 1184 where he served as Senior Vice Commander 2001-2002 and was just elected the Post Commander and was also the Post Quartermaster. He was a member & captain of the V.F.W. Post Honor Guard; the District 9 Senior Vice Commander, and member of V.F.W. National Aide-De-Camp; a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association Chapter #29, & a member of the American Legion Post # 7. He served on the planning committee for the new Veterans cemetery located in Dublin. He was involved in many community services-being " Santa" each year for children, organizations and the elderly at nursing homes and attended the New Life Christian Ministries.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Bower Funeral Home Chapel,Pulaski with Rev. Tim West & Rev. Bobby Ward officiating.
Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery, Dublin with military graveside rites conducted by the Pulaski V. F.W. #1184.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bower Funeral Chapel, Pulaski.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Pulaski VFW Post # 1184 Relief Fund, P.O. Box 2005, Pulaski, Virginia 24301.
