John E Riddle, age 87, of Roanoke, VA formerly of Dublin, VA, passed away on September 11. 2012 in the VA Medical Center,Salem. He was born on March 31, 1925, in Big Stone Gap, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Hardy and Veta Lee Riddle and sister, Betty Riddle all of Dublin, VA.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific as an Amphibious Tank Commander. He reenlisted in the service 2nd Armored Division and was stationed at Camp Hood, TX. He had been very active throughout the years in service organizations. He served as Commander of American Legion Post 225, Dublin, VA; Commander and District Commander of VFW 1184, Pulaski, VA; and Commander of DAV Chapter 29, Christiansburg, VA. He was also a lifetime member of the Pulaski County Lifesaving Crew.
He is survived by one brother, Fred Riddle of Bluefield, WV; son, John Dean of Gainesville, FL; daughters, Lee of Venice, CA., Pamela of Roanoke, VA, Patrice of Winter Park, FL; and grandchildren Brynn, Court, Lauren, and Taylor.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 12 noon , at Bower Funeral Chapel, 1631 Bob White Blvd, Pulaski, VA, with the Rev. Bobby Ward officiating. The Pulaski V.F.W. Post # 1184, will conduct military gravesite rites at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin, VA, following the service at the Chapel.
The family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 A.M. until service hour at Bower Funeral Home, 1631 Bob White Blvd.,Pulaski.
